New hiking shoes

Fenneke and I recently bought new hiking shoes for our upcoming trip to Canada. We plan to go hiking in the Canadian Rockies so a pair of good hiking shoes would be nice to have :-) We went to a local outdoor shop called Bever Zwerfsport were we both bought hiking shoes of Hanwag, category: B.

We have to use these new shoes a couple of times to let them adjust to our feet (and vice versa). Our first hike with the new shoes was approximately 15km long through the 'Hitland' area. After about 10km both Fenneke and I started to experience some pain in our feet, because these new shoes feel tighter and heavier compared to our regular hiking shoes (which are your average New Balance category A shoes). We took a short break to let our feet relax before walking the last 5km. After this break everything felt fine again and we completed the hike without any problems. We have tried the shoes a couple of other times on shorter walks, we are planning to keep doing this up until we leave for Canada.

Nice Google apps

I am a big fan of the way Google applications enable you to do all your important stuff online. This way you always have your data available to you, whether you're at work, on vacation or at home. I use the following apps (almost) every day:

  • Gmail: for all my e-mail, it all started with using Gmail...
  • Google Docs: who needs Microsoft Office these days?
  • Google Reader: for reading up on my favorite websites using RSS
  • Google Calendar: for managing all my appointments and activities
  • Picasa: for managing and editing our ever growing photo collection
  • Picasa Web: for sharing photo albums with friends and family (I also have some public Picasa Web albums)
  • Google Buzz: I use this as a mash up of several popular social websites such as Twitter, Flickr, etc.

Just another day at the office

I wanted to share with you one of the typical things a software engineer is doing at work. A few days back my collegues and I had one of our white board sessions. Below you'll see the result of such a session:

This picture depicts the way we are planning to implement our composite wizard functionality.

@Semlab guys: Dat AreaX ziet er veelbelovend uit voor o.a. Meditra & ViewerPro! Java desktop links of the week, August 23 - Jonathan Giles - Another week has started, so it must be time for another batch of Java desktop links.
