2010-06-27 - Walking from Nieuwerkerk to Krimpen

A couple of weeks ago Fenneke and I decided to go for a walk from our house to my parents house. We decided to take a more scenic route instead of going directly from A to B in the most efficient way. We wanted to hike over 20 km, for Fenneke this was the first see hiked over 20 km. The 27th of June was a very hot day, the temperature rose above 28 degrees Celsius, which made the hike just a little bit heavier. Nevertheless we had a great time and even managed to grab a geocache along the way. We ended up hiking around 21 km, which was a little bit more than we originally had planned. Next time we will try to go for the 25 km mark.

Bellow you'll find pictures and a GPS track log of this hike:

2010-07-03 - Prologue Tour de France

Last weekend (the first weekend of July) the Tour de France came to Rotterdam for the prologue and the first stage. On Saturday (the 3th of July) I went to see the prologue taking place. They set out a route of 8,9 km through downtown Rotterdam crossing the two biggest bridges: the "Erasmusbrug" and the "Willemsbrug". During this prologue the riders start a minute apart, they have to try to make the best time in order to win.

My father managed to get hold of two 'VIP tickets', which meant we got to sail on a boat through the harbor of Rotterdam. The boat then docked beneath the Willemsbrug where we got to see the cyclists pass by. The first part of the day started out with great weather, but later in the afternoon it started to rain. The riders which got to start during the first part of the day had an advantage to the riders which got to start later in the afternoon, because of the changing weather conditions which made the road wet and slippery. It's quite spectacular to see the riders very close by while they are cycling at 50 km per hour.

Bellow you'll find an Google maps containing some geotagged photo's of the boat trip and the prologue followed by a slide show of the photo's.

2010-06-06 - Walking @ Herperduin

During our weekend away to Heijen we spent the Sunday hiking around an area called Herperduin. We hiked for about 10,5 kilometers during which we did a very nice geocache. I can't say much about this geocache, because I don't want to spoil the experience for people who are still planning to do this one, all I can say is that it's quite original and that the surroundings are very beautiful. During the hike the weather seemed to turn from sunny to windy & rainy. Just when we where thinking about quiting the geocache and heading back for the car the weather cleared up again, we ended up having a great and (mostly) dry walk.

Bellow you'll find a GPS track log of our hike:

Geotagged photographs added

As you can see I managed to add a few of the geotagged pictures I took with my new Panasonic TZ-10 to the embedded Google Maps widget. One of these three pictures I actually geotagged by hand, because when I took the picture the GPS on my camera wasn't turned on yet. As it turns out adding geotagged pictures to an embedded Google Maps widget isn't hard to do, just follow these steps:

  1. Take the pictures with a camera which automatically geotags the pictures (like the Panasonic TZ-10), or geotag the pictures yourself.
  2. Upload the pictures to Picasa Web using the Picasa photo editor.
  3. Visit the newly created online photo album and download the automatically created KML file via the "View in Google Earth" link.
  4. Open this file in Google Earth and export it from there to your hard drive.
  5. Upload the exported file to your website and add it to the "mosmap" tag in your blog post (assuming you use Joomla with the Googlemaps plugin installed).
Please note: if you want to show multiple KML files in one embedded Google Maps widget you can use one "mosmap" tag with multiple kml files like this:
kml[0]='http://www.yourdomain.com/kml-files/file1.kml'|kml[1]='http://www.yourdomain.com/kml-files/file2.kml'|kml[2]='http://www.yourdomain.com/kml-files/file3.kml'.
